Founded in 2018 by Larry Ellison and Sir Russell Coutts, SailGP officially launched in 2019 and is now in its fifth season (2024–25). In just a few years, it has established itself as one of the most dynamic and commercially ambitious championships in world sailing.

The league brings together national teams (13 in 2026, including DS Automobiles SailGP Team France)  racing identical, cutting-edge F50 foiling catamarans capable of reaching speeds approaching 100 km/h. Events are staged in major waterfront cities around the globe — from Sydney to San Francisco, Saint-Tropez to Dubai — with a fast-paced, stadium-style format designed to bring fans closer to the action.

Beyond elite competition, SailGP places a strong emphasis on innovation and sustainability. Through its Impact League and its Women’s Pathway Programme, the championship actively promotes environmental responsibility and greater gender equity within the sport.

Blending high performance, technological innovation and global entertainment, SailGP represents a bold new chapter for modern sailing.

The F50, a one-design foiling catamaran capable of speeds in excess of 100km/h...

The F50 is a one-design foiling catamaran descended from the AC50, which was designed for the 35th America's Cup held in Bermuda in 2017.

After that edition of the Cup, three AC50s were converted to comply with a new one-design class called the F50, based on the hulls and certain elements of the AC50s, in order to create a new international fleet racing circuit called SailGP.

The construction of other units by Core Builders Composites in Warkworth, New Zealand, was launched to build a fleet of four boats with American, Australian, British, and French crews.

In Season 5 (2025), 12 one-design catamarans will provide the spectacle in incredible competitions combining sport and entertainment.

Admittedly, the class is one-design and all boats must be identical.

However, it is constantly evolving. Any modifications are applied simultaneously to all boats. This prevents technological escalation and therefore costs, while allowing for performance improvements.

F50: A rigid wing as a mainsail and a jib as a headsail

The boats use a rigid wing-type sail with two elements—a fixed mast and a movable flap—and a jib.

The wing is made up of two removable sections, allowing the upper part to be changed depending on wind conditions.

This means that the mast can reach heights of 18, 24, or 29 meters.

In SailGP races, the mast height and type of jib are imposed by the race committee based on the current weather conditions.

Mainly hydraulic controls

With the exception of the wing apron, all adjustments are hydraulically controlled, powered by electric motors and batteries. This includes active control of the height of all appendages, adjustment of the angle of the foils, raising and lowering of the centerboard, and adjustment of the jib.

These devices allow the crew to be reduced to five sailors.

T-foils since Season 5

With the new T-foils, there is less drag in the water. During maneuvers, the boats maintain more speed and allow sailors to maneuver better.

These new foils are also modular. They can easily be adjusted to suit weather conditions, switching from a large wing for light winds to a small wing for stronger winds.
